Paul Mayén

PAUL MAYÉN (1918 - 2000) was a German-born American industrial designer and architect who was active in the mid-20th century. He is known for his innovative and modernist designs, which combined functionality with sculptural forms.

Mayen studied architecture at the University of Munich before moving to the United States in 1950. He worked for a number of design firms before founding his own firm, Paul Mayen Associates, in 1960. Over the course of his career, Mayen designed a wide range of products, including furniture, lighting fixtures, and consumer electronics.

Mayen's furniture designs were often characterized by their sleek, minimalist forms, and their use of modern materials, such as chrome and glass. He was particularly known for his work with the furniture manufacturer Habitat, for whom he designed a range of chairs and tables.

Mayen was also known for his lighting designs, which often featured sculptural forms and innovative materials, such as fiberglass and aluminum. His "Saturn" lamp, which features a ring of light suspended by thin wires, became an iconic mid-century design.
